Deborah Waserman Curriculum Vitae Deborah Wasserman was born in 1965 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 1967 she immigrated to Israel with her parents and brother. She grew up and resided in the Tel Aviv region and completed her high school education at Talma Yellin High School of the Arts. After finishing her military service she enrolled at the Shenkar College of Design. After graduating from Shenkar College Deborah continued her studies at the Tel Aviv School of the Arts. It was then that Deborah concentrated mainly on painting and creating a series of works some of which were abstract in nature while others leaned toward the collage style of painting. Upon finishing her studies in Israel Deborah was accepted to the California Institute of the Arts ? CalArts, in Los Angeles, California. At CalArts Deborah discovered new artistic media in photography, video art and installation. During the two years she spent learning there and the five years to come she would focus mostly on creating multi-media installations that would involve audio, video, texts and objects. The topics she would mainly deal with relate to her personal history as well as the cultural background and the political context in which she was raised. After completing her B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees at CalArts Deborah got accepted to the Whitney Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of New York. When the program ended she exhibited at the Whitney Open Studios and called her showing ?Captured?. Deborah continued working and creating in New York, while being asked to exhibit in various galleries and participate in additional seminars and workshops for creative enrichment such as the Artists in the Market Place Program at the Bronx Museum as well as an artists? colony at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the state of Maine. Among other events Deborah had a showing in 1997 at the Bronx Museum where she also taught art courses. In 1996 she took part in the World Wide Video Festival in The Hague, Holland. Her video installation was shown at the 1996 Soho Arts Festival, and she also participated in the Art Market exhibition organized by Gen Art in 1996. In 1997 Deborah began to examine the language of painting and its boundaries through a new perspective. In her artistic process she started to create a synthesis of narrative elements present in her works from the start and symbolism, autobiographical materials, surrealism and an eclectic style. Her large format paintings are based on the painting tradition, although they create a personal language of their own both original and progressive. In an era of high tech and full-scale media coverage, advertising and technological advancement, Deborah chooses to speak of the return to authenticity, sentiment, sensuality, a desire for depth, mysteriousness and beauty. This beauty exposes trends of growth, pain, death, and decay. It brings fantasies out of the web of memories and digs into the special meaning of the Self along with all the facets of the ego and its complex identity. Since 1988 Deborah has been working and living partly in New York and partly in Tel Aviv. In August 2000 she will open her second solo exhibition in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Dany Karavan s "Monument to the Negev Brigade" was erected over three years, 1965 - 1968. An environmental sculpture in concrete, it combines functional components and symbols to offer a tangible expression of the battles of the War of Independence. In creating this dramatic, complex work, Karavans skills as theatrical designer were called into play. This is one of the most ambitious examples of monument art so prevalent in the Israeli visual tradition from the Trumpeldor memorial at Tel Hai, to the monuments to the fallen of the War of Independence, and up to Tumarkins Tel Aviv monument to the victims of the Holocaust, and many more.

David Reeb b. Rehovot, Israel, lives in Tel Aviv "Let's Have Another War" 1997 acrylic on canvas Installation of paintings Reeb's paintings are based on Israeli press photographs of the conflict in the Middle East, mostly by Miki Kratzman, a photographer he greatly respects. His "interventions" are more than copies; they eliminate the minutiae of the photographic process and capture the urgency of the situation. The images Reeb chooses do not deal with major events, heroes, martyrs, or the more graphic side of the violence. Instead, he portrays the banality of the conflict and the routine sense of danger and anger that fills the inhabitants of the area
